The boys did not even attempt to go outside yesterday. It was just gross out. Everything is half slush and half ice. We watched a lot of people try to leave the neighborhood yesterday. This is kind of sad since I am sure a lot of them just needed to get to work. I am so thankful that we have our power and that we work from home. Otherwise, we probably would have been in the same situation. I still question if school will be in tomorrow since it will be so cold tonight and refreeze anything that melts. We may venture to the store (which is 3 miles away) just to see how roads are in case I have to be making school runs tomorrow.
So, what to do when you are in the house and have new gluten free ingredients hanging out in the pantry?
I had a good plan and while things looked like they were coming together...
disaster struck!
While I have a silpat (and I will use it next time), I used wax paper as my safety net for rolling this up...
don't use wax paper...it breaks when it gets damp! This was a mess and the dough stuck to it. I was not quiet about it either. Yes, I was a sailor in a former life. Tony came running downstairs to see what had happened. When he saw the mess, he told me to just throw it away.
Um, no way was I throwing it away! I was on a mission! I "fixed" it enough to make sweet rolls!
I'm not going to lie, I was still worried. I had no idea what they would taste like.
Everything is saved when you put a sugary glaze on it...right?
I love that my boys are adventurous and trust me enough to try things! Even I was scared of these!
I would say these are similar to a hot cross bun. They have a nice chew to them and if you know gluten free stuff, you know that is important. They had a sweet crust on the bottom and were slightly pillowy soft in the center. They were really good!
Now, I have to make them again. I will share the recipe when I make them from start to finish with one preparation which is not the way this happened. I ended up calling these a tasty accident.
It feels strange to me lately because I am a pretty seasoned baker, but I am really working on some new gluten free recipes that have been a challenge. I didn't let this go because I really want to learn how this stuff works. I actually like learning about different ingredients that other cultures use in their baking. It's funny because here in the United States, think of wheat as the go to baked good source, while other cultures use different products like chickpea flour, rice flour and tapioca. While I hate the disasters, I really like finding new products that taste so good.
Do you throw away disasters or do you try to make them work?
Do you have a potty mouth or no?
I don't really have a potty mouth, but I do curse a lot in my head! Good save on the buns, they look delicious!
ReplyDeleteSorry I've been so quiet lately - I've been reading, just not commenting! For some reason my mom's laptop didn't like blogger comment forms so it'd always take me 10+ tries before I was successful :P
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you guys for not wanting to go out in the ice. Snow doesn't scare me so much anymore, so long as it's daylight. But ice? Verrrry scary...4wd can only do so much!
Your "tasty mistake" certainly does look tasty - I definitely try to salvage anything that ends up not as good as I'd hoped, too. Smear some peanut butter on anything and it's good as new! :P
One time I completely left the sugar out of a cake, though - it was all mixed but I hadn't yet baked it when I tasted the batter and realized it was NASTY. That I figured there was no hope for, so it got chucked :P
I love experimenting with new flours, too. Can't wait to see what you come up with!!
Haha...I have a major potty mouth too. I think it freaks my students out a little. :-)
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to turn a mess into a success! These look delicious!
Those buns look good! I really need to get back to baking. I am missing it!!
ReplyDeleteLOL - I'm a sailor too my friend ;-) Sometimes I think I even offend my husband!! My first inclination is to toss goofs. My husband, however, is far more rational and tries to save the day. Thankfully. I hope it all thaws today so you can get out finally.
ReplyDeleteI usually try to make things work when disaster strikes. Only once was it so bad that we just had to toss it all (pumpkin soup, Fall '08... it was tragic).
ReplyDeleteYum! Yum! Yum!
ReplyDeleteOnly when alone (driving)!! Otherwise, you won't hear a peep of that out of me. I think it's having little siblings that makes it become a habit not to drop those word-bombs.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a VERY tasty accident! And I have a HUGE potty mouth! Cuss words are fun to say! ;)
ReplyDeleteYou are superwoman!! I would have totally trashed them and just been angry the rest of the day for my failure. Way to bring that back to life - and make it tasty to boot!
ReplyDeleteGood job saving the dough! I definitely have a hard time throwing away food and would probably try to make it work, too! And I most definitely would have let out some unmentionable words in the process. :)
ReplyDeleteNice save on the rolls! When it comes to such instances, it really depends on my mood. Somedays I'm a little more patient than others when it comes to kitchen issues.
ReplyDeleteDay 4... I feel as if someone needs to come rescue you!
And I have a potty mouth. I blame working in an office that is pretty much all guys. At least I am somewhat good about not letting it slip when the situation calls for it. :)
I tried making brownies using silken tofu as an egg replace and they totally failed. I broke up the brownies, mixed them with water and two eggs, and rebaked them and now they're great.
ReplyDeletei generally eat everything...except one time i made soup out of tofu noodles and the noodles smelled so bad i was gagging as i was stirring. that one went down the sink
ReplyDeleteGluten free baking seems very challenging but quite rewarding! I have been flooding my mom with gluten free cook books and baking books so that she can cook for my autistic brother.
ReplyDeleteI love looking at the recipes you come up with b/c most of them are bookmarked and later printed to send her way =)
I can't bake to save my life, btw - have I mentioned that? haha! go you!
as for the fridge/freezer, with two boys it does seem like quite a task to keep up with! Maybe take baby steps here and there? I'm sure you already do! But just in case, maybe one day check all expiration dates and make a list of what needs to be used up within the next few days, and then another day group like items and put fruit and veggie snacks in plastic bags for the boys to grab and munch at will, and so on.
wow I talk a lot -- sorry about that! =) If you every need tips i'm here for ya! <3
Have a great day Sarena!

ha. when things like this happen in my kitchen, YES to the potty mouth.
ReplyDeleteI still have some interesting outcomes with gf baking... which is VERY frustrating because I have been a baker for YEARS. crazy. it is VERY different, though.
these rolls look FABULOUS!
I have a HORRIBLE potty mouth. Pretty sure I was a sailor in my last five or six lives.
ReplyDeleteim a sailor, in this life time :)
ReplyDeletethrowing away food, never! glad you saved them..and yes sugarey glazes help :)
and also props to you for sticking with recipe development on GF stuff. NOT an easy task!
I swear so much when I bake. My roommates make fun of me because in general I don't swear, but put me in a kitchen and things change! lol
ReplyDeleteI too was a former sailor, especially in the kitchen! The Mr always knows when things aren't going right in the kitchen by the stream of curses flying out of it!!!
ReplyDeleteI sometimes try to save my disasters. It depends on what happened and how bad it is. Sometimes they're beyond repair before you even try to make them into something else though!
I'm glad you were able to save it!!!
ReplyDeleteI hate icy snowy weather :( I moved to VA from Ohio but its still snowing sometimes here!!! haha
I'm glad you could save it.
ReplyDeleteYou know I have a potty mouth, I'm not as bad in person though :)
Unforunately, I have an awful potty mouth. I say it's because I'm in college and I'll grow out of it one day... ;)
ReplyDeletephew! glad you were able to save it! That has happened to us many times...and sometimes still does :)
ReplyDeleteOOooohhhh!!!! Every once in a while I turn into a little sailor. (This coming from the girl who yells at rude drivers that they are "not nice people!"
ReplyDeleteNormally, I try to save my disasters. Sometimes though, it's best just to walk away!
I almost got stuck driving home from work yesterday. It was scary!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if I'd say I had a potty mouth, but I do interject the F word into a lot of sentences.
I don't mind being stuck at home....but I think with kids I may go a little squirly! What a solution-yummmmmy!!!!
ReplyDeletei def have a potty mouth (grew up around a construction company-I have a potty mouth by default!)-i'm trying to work on it though, esp with all my friends having kids!
That box of tapioca flour kinda looks like it's from the 70s, no?
ReplyDeleteGood save and yum, yum, yum! Yeah, I was a sailor in my former life too. Not pretty out of little girls like us, but necessary sometimes!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like crazy weather, I didn't even think you would get snow in that part of the country?
way to save that recipe, and it turned out fantastic!
ReplyDeleteHope your birthday is filled with lots of love.
