Cupcake Metaphor...

I feel like this cupcake is a metaphor for my life right now...

I know...over dramatic, but hey, that's my mood today.

After our discussion of over coming some fears in the kitchen, I decided to be bold and try to tackle my cupcake issues. Yes, I have issues with cupcakes. Namely gluten free cupcakes. Mine never rise like I want them to. Well they did today! That's one thing checked off of my list of cupcake accomplishments. I heard cupcakes are out, but really how can they be out? It's a cupcake for goodness sake. I'm a fan of the cupcake while the illustrator is more of a cake fan. I like single serve things and crusty exteriors while he likes the soft doughy insides of breads and cakes. It's all a preference...much like the flavors/textures of gluten free cakes.

Anyway, back to how this is a metaphor for my life right now, well it looks good and tastes good, but there is something that needs to change...

The flavor of the cupcake is good, but not great. I suspect my flour combination. No worries though, I will take one for the team here. Practice makes perfect, again another metaphor for my life right now...

I think I need to keep trying! Oh and did I mention I think I need a program for my addiction to seven minute icing!

This is in no way a negative post, I'm just in thought over load these days. Mind you, playing with cupcakes is not what I'm supposed to be doing right now. I need to finish up book keeping stuff. Oh well, it was a tasty distraction.

I need ideas for flavor combinations. Max watched cupcake wars the other day and now he is on cupcake mode. I'm happy to play his game, but I need some ideas!

  2. My mom makes some of the best 7-minute icing... for special occasions only...

If you need more cupcakes ideas, I would suggest googling cupcake shops online and seeing what their menuts are? They get pretty creative- and it's where I've found inspiration in the past!

  3. Your cupcakes look delicious Sarena!

I know what you mean about being on overload -- sometimes it feels like there are too many thoughts and I can't keep track of them all and then I just feel overwhelmed. Whatever you're thinking about, I hope it works out for you!

  4. LOL I like that metaphor. I'm not a cupcake or cake girl though. Give me a cookie though.....

  5. As for flavor ideas, I've had really good success with using tea. I once brewed earl gray tea into the liquid (milk in this case) and then let the liquid cool before using it. I also crushed up a bit of the leaf straight into the batter. These were outstanding with lemon icing!

  6. Those are some pretty cupcakes, even if they aren't quite right for you just yet.

When it comes to cake, I love vanilla bean. Yummy!

  9. They look wonderful, Sarena! Love the metaphor, too; and that Max is keeping you thinking of new ideas. I love some of the ideas on Cupcake Wars once I get past the over-the-top drama :P

  10. Oh Sarena, in no way is looking for change or newness or improvement a negative thing. Its a hard thing but such contemplations can ONLY lead to better cupcakes. :) I'm here if you ever want to talk!

  13. this just goes to show that a persistent determination mixed with a bit of fear and an over-dramatic mood can sometimes be the right fuel to tackle baking burdens. These cupcakes are ADMIRABLY PERFECT and your ability to create such a masterpiece proves that you can tackle many situations like this cupcake metaphor. you have a resilience about you that i know can help pull you through any situation/ break through any wall that comes your way.

  16. Try to have the same patience with life and yourself that you had with the cupcakes.

I love Reeses Peanut Butter Cup cupcakes!

  18. I don't think I've ever commented before but I just wanted to say how much I LOVE AND APPRECIATE your blog. I just found out that I'm "lactose challenged" and it is amazing to find all of your great recipes. I thought I could never have a cupcake again! Also I've been looking all over for an icing and this one looks like just the thing! You are awesome!!!!

  19. If one has to have good metaphor material, a cupcake is certainly a good stuff. ;-) Those look fabulous. I've never like 7-minute icing, but my sister has that same addiction. I'm sure you'll perfect the cupcakes, Sarena, but I doubt that any of us would complain if we could reach through the screen and get one. :-)

  21. Pretty cupcakes! Have you ever heard of Crumbs? Check out their website for fantastic flavor ideas: http://www.crumbs.com/cupcakes. It's not on their site now, but they make a Key Lime cupcake that is out of this world.
