Yesterday was just weird. You all know that I basically work for
the illustrator. He hates it when I say that, but really I do. He draws and I do all the other stuff for him (book keeping, collections, marketing, photography for his blog). Anyway, our desks are face to face and we spend all day everyday together. So, when one of us has a bad day, the other one does too. It's inevitable. Since I don't deal directly with the clients as much any more since he is doing more comic work right now, I just get mad when crap happens to him. Anyway, long story short, he was frustrated and we needed to get out to run a few errands, get some fresh air and get a little human contact with the outside world. Little did we know that the human contact part only made us wish we didn't leave the house.
We decided to go to Borders yesterday to check out the last bit they have left on the shelves. An aside on this, it makes me sad to see this happening to a bookstore. Granted, they were way over priced, but I hate seeing a place that we loved going to go away like this. I feel really bad for all of those people that lost their jobs too. Ok, so we were at the bookstore trying to get a little peace and relax...there was a kid (about four years old...Jacob Michael to be exact and I know this because his mom kept calling him this loudly) running through the bookstore screaming DIE, DIE, DIE. Really, this totally freaked me out. The mom never said a word to him to stop doing that, she was just following him around the store. Anyway, so we looked around at books, tried to relax and then went to the cash register to buy a couple of books we found. While paying, the cashier took it upon herself to ask what our (mine and
the illustrator's) relationship was. Really, is that ok to ask? When I told her we were married, she then laughed and said she thought I was his daughter. Seriously? That was messed up...nothing like being told you look like a pedophile to bring your spirits up. I told him this was the equivalent of asking a woman if she's pregnant. NOT COOL!
This is what I looked like yesterday. I can't believe I'm actually posting this because it is not flattering AT ALL, but I can see that I did not really dress my age. I don't mind looking young for my age, but I didn't think I looked that young. Well, I still don't think I look that young...there was all kinds of "not too bright" going on with that woman. Anyway, it was weird.
See...we go together! We are the same age...well, I'm a little older than him! He calls me a cougar every year during that one month.
Speaking of youth, this is a throwback to my youth that I hadn't had for a while...
cinnamon toast.
Jay left me with the heel end of the loaf of bread I made earlier this week and there is nothing better than toasting that up with a little earth balance, a little sugar and a lot of cinnamon! The key is to put the butter, sugar and cinnamon on before you toast it so you get these soft gooey pockets of cinnamon, buttery, sugar goodness. This was a standard breakfast for me growing up. This and cheese toast. Now I want
monkey bread.
I'm pretty sure I should have been on What Not To Wear yesterday and yeah, I'm dressed pretty much like that today. Do you think it matters how you dress when you are casual? I don't think it matters. I mean you won't see me wearing my pj's out, but being comfortable is ok with me.
Sarena I think you look great the way you are -- some people just don't the emotional intelligence to realize that it is not ok to ask things like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm all about the daytime casual. Why get dressed up when you don't have to? I keep my blow dryer put away, and my makeup in the drawer on any day I don't have to pull it out! It's rude of anyone to ask things like that woman did!
ReplyDeleteWhenever something like that happens to me, I just take a moment to thank my lucky stars that I have more sense than that :)
I feel the same way about Borders closing. It's sad, but when you can buy books online cheaper and have them delivered, it's not too surprising! I dress casually all the time and rarely wear makeup when I'm out running errands, but I think it's so bizarre for someone to ask you that! Cinnamon toast is a very comforting memory for me from childhood - delish!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I work side-by-side all day long, too! Our desks are literally 3 feet apart. It's amazing that neither of us has killed each other yet, LOL. We're together 24 hours a day for the past 6 years! Never apart for more than a few hours. Kind of weird, huh?
ReplyDeletePeople tell us that my husband looks much older than me all the time, but I'm actually 3.5 years old than him. He takes it in stride, but yeah, coming from a cashier, that's just creepy. Why did she care? So rude! Some people just can't contain their thoughts I guess. Sigh.
That is so lame! Im sorry that happened to you guys. I have had people ask me tons of inappropriate questions too...especially since I became vegan. Lame lady.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, that cinnamon toast looks so yummy! Now I'm craving some :)
Mmm, cinnamon toast was my very favorite thing as a kid... my mom had a shaker jar of cinnamon sugar :) I haven't had it in so long... I need to change that!
ReplyDeletewhat a crazy inappropriate thing to ask - and you looked totally fine - comfortable! I have been guilty of going to the store in my yoga pants... ;) some people just have no class.
I'm so sad about Borders, and the future of books... I LOVE books, love to open them and feel and smell the paper... I don't WANT a reader. I want books!
have a great weekend, girl!
I love that, "See, we go together." You guys totally do! Don't you just hate it when people say stupid stuff like that. It's like, seriously? Where the hell is your brain? All you can do is look back and laugh though. Plus, take it as a compliment that you look young!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's so rude! I've had that happen to me before and I'm always so annoyed. Like my mom says, it will be a blessing when we are 50...
ReplyDeleteCinnamon toast was one of my fav treats! Adding the topping then broilng is key. The sugar gets a little crunchy... mmm...
Everyone's allowed to dress down and you do look younger, but you're right- that is a very inappropriate question on all accounts! I'd be upset, too.
ReplyDeleteI have an older guy friend (40's) and sometimes he takes me to dinner when he's in town to catch up. Totally normal friend behavior. But we often get looks like he's trying to "creep" on me or something. Or I look like a gold digger. Either one is not fair. I hate getting "judging eyes".
I'm still amazed that happened!
ReplyDeleteThe carpal tunnel tech at my chiropractor is obsessed with the fact I don't have kids. "But you want kids, right? I mean you're planning to have kids, aren't you? " Drives me nuts! And she's stabbing me with tiny needles when she's asking this!
Ugh, that kid needed a good slap or spanking. I KNEW as a kid to not do that behavior as a kid or face the wrath of my mom.
ReplyDeleteWow!!! That is so rude. I always have thought you looked young but in a wonderful, gorgeous way. I definitely think you guys go together!!
ReplyDeleteI know I already look young, but definitely look more young in certain clothing. Basically anything not dressed up makes me look younger.
ReplyDeleteThat kid does sound creepy. And annoying.
I worked at Border's last year- I'm glad I got my old job back before it closed!
ReplyDeleteThat's totally inappropriate of that woman to ask you what your relationship with your husband is! My mom looks really young- like, not old enough to have me as a daughter- and people are always surprised to find out that she is 26 years older than me. The way they say it is so weird though- it's like they're hinting that she looks like she had me when she was a teenager?!
wow, people are nosy! and you don't look like his daughter, but you do look youthful.
ReplyDeleteThe things some people ask and say these days never cease to amaze me. Just when we think we've seen and heard it all at work, another one comes in. Oi vei. Sorry you had to be subject to that :\
ReplyDeleteI love your style. I see "cute" clothes (read: flowy tops and skirts) and may think I love it, but at the same time, I always know I'd rather throw on a t-shirt, hoodie, cons and the comfiest jeans I can find.(...and "dressed up" is wearing a nice sweater, heh...) I mean, as long as they're clean and fit well enough I don't think there's anything wrong with that, either!
I was asked an inappropriate question as well the other day... people just have no tact. Grr.
ReplyDeleteCinnamon toast = childhood favorite. We have a Mickey Mouse panini press, so I used to have "Mickey Toast" when I was younger :D
I cannot believe someone asked you that question! It is so inappropriate. I really don't appreciate when people ask if my brothers and I are dating. It is so awkward.
ReplyDeleteI hate that Borders is closing too :-/
HOW RUDE! *in Stephanie Tanner voice* Seriously, why would she even ask that. Okay, I take back everything I said....I HATE PEOPLE!
ReplyDeleteAmazing what some people don't understand is RUDE to say!!! That's what I look like on my days off-- jeans, sweatshirt, sneakers! No shame, ha!
ReplyDeleteSome people are so rude I can't stand it! You are dressed your age, you are dressed totally normal! It's not like you are in a tiny belly showing top (and if you were, good for you! :) ) !
ReplyDeleteYum to that cinnamon toast!
You are not going to believe this, but something very similar happened to me yesterday and we got a free dinner for it! We were walking through the casino in the hotel in town to go to dinner at on of their restaurants - a family-friendly bar & grill type place. My husband paused for a second to look at something and the management practically jumped on me asking for ID. We said that we were just going to dinner, not gambling or drinking and asked to be left alone. He persisted, I got pissed and said "I am petite not a kid. I'm 36 years old, leave me alone and let me go get some dinner!" I walked off, husband followed (he was also pissed). Mind you, this was not even the first or second time that had happened to me there. Turned out the guy was a manager for the casino and he came into the restaurant apologizing, saying that his wife is petite too and has that problem. Anyway, he comped our whole dinner, which we were appreciative of ... but it was so, so inappropriate and embarrassing!
ReplyDeleteOnce someone made a comment implying that I was Tony's daughter. Definitely inappropriate and I think hurtful to my husband too!
I'm all about casual! You know we work together at home too :)
Oh honey, what you posted yourself wearing is what I wear on a daily basis. Yup yup. Actually, I probably look less put together than you cause I don't wear a belt.
ReplyDeleteYes, I do agree that you do look quite young, but I'd never make the father-daughter assumption. lol!
I've never added the cinnamon sugar before toasting...always after. And now I'm intrigued...have I been doing it wrong?!
Gah, sorry for the weird day, Sarena! That is most definitely an inappropriate question. Sheesh. I definitely believe in comfy casual clothes. You look perfectly fine (and quite cute) - I love your belt and shoes. :)
ReplyDeleteAwww....I think you look so cute!! You look way cuter than I do when I dress casually. :)
ReplyDeleteHope you had a better day today, hon!
You look super cute! And that's totally inappropriate of the cashier. Sometimes people seriously have no tact!
ReplyDeleteAt least your not walking around borders with thigh high suede boots and a leather mini skirt trying to look 20. How you dress is your business. The sales clerk probably thought she was complimenting you and didn't stop to think of your husbands feelings. Some people.
ReplyDeleteVERY inappropriate question. You looked fine! And he does NOT look like your father! Poor guy...his feelings must have been bruised by that.
ReplyDeleteI've gotten the pregnant question from someone who barely knew me...along with the asker SQUEEZING MY STOMACH. AAACCCCKKK! I looked her right in the eye and said "I'm not pregnant, and please stop squeezing my fat". lol
That cinnamon toast looks scrumptious. Sorry about the cashier at borders, some people just like to pry into others people's business.
ReplyDeleteAs for attire, if you're just running some errands or something I think it's fine to be casual and comfy. I mean, who wants to dress up to go grocery shopping? But if you work outside the home, I think it's important to dress well for work and other business type get togethers.
That's so rude that someone would ask that!!!
ReplyDeleteYummmm cinnamon toast..haven't had that in awhile! My mom used to make me that for breakfast all the time when I was younger.
ok I have to be honest...you do look really young! Take it as a compliment though!! Someday when you are 50...you'll only LOOK 30!! haha How old are you anyway?
ReplyDeleteyou look awesome (and young!) rock it, work it, and she was clearly just jealz of how amazing you look.
ReplyDeleteppl say the DUMBEST most ignorant things. I get called an "amazon" all the time b/c of my height. Gee, it just gives me such warm fuzzies. NOT!
You are dressed like I am dressed 98% of the time... and I think you look adorable! ;)
ReplyDeleteomg... I refound this post, because I'm looking for your coconut whipped cream recipe... anyway... my friends recently said to me about my ex: "We were worried about you... he looked like he could be your dad!" And he looks a little like your man... bearded and whatnot... funny!!! apparently having a hairy face makes you look old! whatever... ha! people! :-)
