I'm Not A Runner...Help!

I got this in the mail yesterday, which made me super excited!

And I finally signed up for my personal training certification course! This is something I've wanted to do for way longer than I even want to think about. I am so excited!

I also went on my first official outside intentional run. Truth be told, I woke up an hour late on Tuesday morning. That NEVER happens. I guess I turned the alarm off and mentally decided to get some extra sleep. So, in my sleepy state, I told the boys that since it was so pretty out (almost 70 degrees) that I would start training for a 5k with them. What in the world was I thinking???

I should tell you that I work out in the morning because that is my most energized time. It works for me. Even in my groggy state, I can wake up in a snap when I start going. When the evening rolls around, the last thing I want to do is workout. The boys were my motivation yesterday. They wanted to go out running so badly...how could I let them down?! So, we walked to the park for our warm up and walk ran according to my couch to 5k running app. I really liked the app. It took us on intervals and it's definitely a good way to get you going. However, I'm afraid that I really just don't know how to run properly. I'm not a runner by any means and really, I don't want the bug. I'm far too infatuated with other types of workouts. I do think that becoming a trainer makes it my responsibility to be able to coach someone if they do want to run. So, I'm going to learn to like it or at least learn to not run like a freak. One or the other will happen.

I'm going to go to a running shop to check out how I run and get some shoes thanks to my good friend, Heather's, suggestion. I'm also going to start reading up on running too.

So, to my running friends...give me some information. What do you like, what do you not like, any books to read or other resources?

By the way, how is it already February 1st? Where in the world did January go?

  1. If you're trying to learn more about plans, running workouts, fueling up before or after, I'd go to runnersworld.com. They're pretty informative!

And good luck! We should really point out how awesome it is that your boys want to run a 5k. I think I hated running at that age!

  2. Thanks Amy for the suggestion. I'm definitely going to check it out. Seriously, I hated/hate running and Jay really loves it. He was talking about how he needed to pace himself better and he was already asking me when we are going again. Max was getting cramps, but he ate right before we left. Max is a lot more like me with quick and heavy workouts. Jay is more like Tony was at that age (I could never get Tony to run now) and he ran more/played soccer.

I really loved going out with them though. I'm excited about the boys being excited about doing stuff like this with me though.

  4. I'd definitely get yourself a pair of good fitting shoes. Really, you don't need to know anything about it. Just run! You sort of figure it out as you go along.

Jason has that Couch to 5K app and he really likes it.

  5. I know a lot of readers said this already, but the Couch to 5K is a really good plan. I did it back when I ran (well...for the three weeks I ran, lol) and it's set up really well. Good luck!!

  6. I agree with Lee-- good shoes are important! Other than that...just head out and go! You'll probably feel like you "run funny"...until you figure out that everyone runs funny in their own funny way :-)

  8. shoes are key!! of course i am bias and go for kswiss, but there are great brands out there. Have them check your gait first. Very important. So exciting!!

  9. I am really impressed with your commitment to your future clients, Sarena! They are lucky to have you!

I have a love/hate relationship with running. When I go regularly, I really do get to a point where I enjoy it and look forward to it. However, getting to that point is not easy because I don't naturally love running. I think good running shoes is crucial, and doing plenty of stretching for me. Other than that, for me, the key is to run consistently so that I get to the point where it feels good rather than painful. Then I start to look forward to challenging myself and going faster and farther.

Hope you enjoy it as you go.

  10. I'm not a runner...I tried several times, and finally messed my knee up enough to stop me. I admire runners though---and people who jump into running and do it the right way with a plan and all that!

Yay for February...it is closer to spring :-)

  11. Okay, I didn't have time to look for this when I posted my other comment, but wanted to pass it along. I found these stretches especially good for running. I used to have some niggling problems with my ankles and knees, but doing these stretches has really helped.

  14. Running is for everyone! All you need is a good pair of shoes (and socks - Balega are my FAV!) and that's it. Just get out there! :)

  15. Good shoes are key - make sure you run around in every pair before you purchase any. A good quality running store should let you run a bit outside in each pair you try on.

  16. Yay! Congrats! So exciting :)

And I agree with Amy - Runner's World is one of the best resources out there!

  17. First step, get a gait analysis. Most good running stores will do this, but our park district actually had a gait analysis review that was done by a sports rehabilitation clinic. This was in depth and involved two 1 hour sessions. These services range from $10-$30, at least where I live.

  18. Too funny. I just signed up for a 5K too, thanks to my husband's prodding. And I am also NOT A RUNNER. I just do not love it. I have some apps that I use on occasion, but I enjoy my pilates, my yoga, and my HIIT workouts way too much. So..I will suffer along with you. Sorry I cannot give you any advice, though! LOL

  19. Big Peach Running Co. is where all the Atlanta area folks recommend going. They will do a stride test and recommend a good shoe for you.

Also, I think the key with running is much like yoga. It's good to have a goal, but more than anything the value is in the doing of it, now how fast or how far you go. Those are things to help you grow, but are not the most important thing.

I certainly never thought I would be a fanatic about it, but I think the fact that I wasn't pushing myself too much in the beginning and allowing myself the time it would take to pick up distance and good form has helped me become a runner for life.

I wish you all the best. You know I would be happy to run with you some time. :)
