Anyone else feel that way? I don't know if it's the heat, the lack of vacation time for the 4th, the heat...yeah, I'm thinking it's mostly the heat. Tony and I worked yesterday, so there was little fun had. We both have a lot going on, so that's not a bad thing, but we both felt guilty for not celebrating traditionally with the boys. It was way too hot to do anything outside other than sit in the lake and there was no way we were getting anywhere close to Lake Lanier on the 4th. Hello crazy town. There was an accident there a few weeks ago that has left us feeling extremely cautious about venturing during the busiest times, especially with kids. So, we stayed in.
Instead of the traditional grilling out, we also opted for a different meal...
PIZZA!
Tony asked for peppers and onions on my gluten free crust.
I wanted peppers, onions, tomatoes and nutritional yeast on my chickpea flatbread.
The 3 boys asked for ham and pineapple on my gluten free crust.
There pizza was beautiful and really stole the show. They devoured it in no time! I should have made them two!
Dessert last night was fruit for all! The watermelon was perfectly ripe! I have a serious problem around good watermelon...I can't stop eating it!
I swear, after not having pizza for years, it is now my new favorite thing to make at home. My nephew that's visiting us is sensitive to gluten (we believe he has celiac as well), so he's on a gluten free diet. Max is now eating gluten free and has been headache free since making the choice to give it a try. It was a gluten free pizza fest here last night!
While it wasn't a traditional celebration, it did end up being a good day. We let the boys have the bigger tv and they watched movies until 11:00. Today is about the same, but we're going to the dinner theater to watch Back To The Future! This time no dinner though, just treats (we are cheap like that).
So, did you do the traditional 4th of July celebration? Anyone else have extreme addictions to watermelon? Makes for getting extra exercise at night when you have to get up to go to the bathroom a few extra times!
I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like watermelon! But my boys love it. They can kill an entire watermelon between the 2 of them. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely wishing the holiday would have been attached to a weekend. It seemed so weird in the middle of the week like that. Not cool!
ReplyDeleteThose pizzas look awesome! Wish I could've come over and eaten your cheese elss one with you. I want to try your chickpea crust. Nice that you all just got to relax though for the holiday. After your busy weeks you've had I bet it was nice. :)
ReplyDeleteI think we're giving up on traditional everything. After making lots of plans as to what we'd eat and the plan was for fairly traditional 4th fare, we ended up out running a few errands and actually ate out midafternoon. Shocking, huh? But it worked just fine. Hubby even ate leftovers for dinner and took the rest for lunch. Now that's a win! I just can't face cooking with this heat. Being cloistered in the AC even without turning the oven on is not much fun, but it's a necessity with these temps. We also rented movies, read books, and had quiet time. Son was off with friends.
ReplyDeleteGreat news on the gluten-free diet success front for Max! There's nothing like knowing that a child can potentially avoid a lifetime of related health issues by going gluten free. Hope your nephew does really well on the gf diet, too! He's certainly at the right house to get the best gf pizza--woohoo! :-)
xo,
Shirley
The pizza looks fantastic. I hear you on avoiding the lake on the 4th. We do too. It's just a nut house.
ReplyDeleteI never liked pineapple on a pizza until recently. I don't know what took me so long to get on board!
ReplyDeletecompletely non traditional here, we are vacationing in wine country again. :) we had a 4th themed bbq last weekend so I could write one blog post for me and another article for someone else, so aside from fireworks it felt like we celebrated! ;)
ReplyDeleteBack to the Future - how fun! :)
We took my 2 year old to his first movie ($1 Regal Cinema kids' movies)...a fun experience! Then had dinner and pool fun at a friend's house. A perfect 4th. Looks like you guys had a great meal!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a great fourth, even if it wasn't "traditional" :-) Glad y'all had a good family day!!
ReplyDeleteWe were traditional in the fact that we grilled burgers, but mine was a veggie burger :) And we watched fireworks! That pizza looks amaaazing, Sarena!
ReplyDeleteyay for gluten free pizza! next time we are coming over
ReplyDeletexoxo
